A reflection on Arcturus founder Kevin Welch's role as an AIAS mentor at UNLV and his commitment to supporting, encouraging, and preparing the next generation of architects for professional practice.
Every architect can point to someone who helped shape their career.
Sometimes it was a professor. Sometimes it was a project architect willing to explain why a detail mattered. Sometimes it was a mentor who took the time to offer honest advice at exactly the right moment. Those conversations often leave a lasting impact, and they remind us that architecture has always been a profession built on shared knowledge.
As part of that tradition, Arcturus founder Kevin Welch serves as a mentor with the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, working alongside students as they prepare to enter the profession.
Drawing on more than twenty-six years of experience across residential, hospitality, commercial, and interior design, Kevin meets with students to discuss topics that are rarely found in textbooks—professional practice, client relationships, design process, career development, leadership, and the realities of building a meaningful career in architecture.
For Kevin, mentorship is not about having all the answers. It is about asking thoughtful questions, encouraging curiosity, and helping students develop the confidence to trust their own ideas while remaining open to continual learning. Every architect's path is different, and one of the greatest strengths of the profession is the diversity of experiences that shape those who practice it.
Having followed a nontraditional path to licensure himself, Kevin understands that success is rarely linear. Persistence, humility, and a willingness to keep learning often matter just as much as technical ability. Those are lessons he hopes to pass on to the next generation of architects.
